SBB Cargo is investing around CHF 510 million in its modern locomotive fleet.

SBB Cargo has bought 50 Re 482 dual-system freight locomotives built by Bombardier Transportation for its Switzerland-Germany services, and 35 of these are already in service. In addition, SBB Cargo has converted 26 Re 420 locomotives for dual-system cross-border services at its own Bellinzona works. Moreover, SBB Cargo is using the latest dual-system locomotives for its Switzerland-Italy services. 18 Re 484 locomotives from Bombardier Transportation were delivered on schedule and have been in service since April 2005. 12 Re 474s are on order with Siemens, and three Vossloh Am 840 diesel locomotives are in use on non-electrified lines. In addition, SBB Cargo has options for a further 32 locomotives for cross-border services from and to Germany and Italy.

Currently SBB Cargo has a total of 370 locomotives in service. Added to these are 255 shunting engines. For domestic and Germany freight services, SBB Cargo also has 45 new diesel shunters with environment-friendly soot particle filters. These are improving cost efficiency and are the first of SBB Cargo's locomotives to be equipped with radio remote control systems. SBB Cargo currently has approximately 11,000 freight wagons on the rails. New wagons are currently being delivered and more are on order.
