No. 1 for rail freight in Switzerland SBB Cargo is the subsidiary of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) responsible for freight and Switzerland’s leading provider of rail freight services. The company is based in Basel and has been headed since August 2007 by Nicolas Perrin. Every day, about 4400 employees guarantee top-quality logistics in a wide range of different areas.
SBB Cargo provides vital services to large sections of the Swiss economy. Last year, it generated 13.37 billion net tonne-km of traffic and carried a total of 53.7 million net tonnes. The lion’s share of SBB Cargo traffic is transalpine freight on the north-south axis through Switzerland – hardly surprising as the Gotthard line is the most heavily used freight route through the Alps.
All through Switzerland and right across Europe The days when trains were transferred to another rail company at national borders are long gone. Today we cross the border into Germany and Italy and back again with our own locomotives and crews. Growth is our motto: growth across borders. The primary objective of SBB Cargo is to become a successful European freight company guaranteeing customers high quality and excellent productivity.
In terms of international north-south traffic, SBB Cargo has become a European rail freight operator. This is because we are both grasping the opportunities offered by open access and building up our own production know-how in competition with the DB Group and Trenitalia Cargo. Milestones in the implementation of this strategy were reached with the foundation and expansion of our two subsidiaries SBB Cargo Deutschland and SBB Cargo Italia.
